Lincs T&F County Champs (Day 1)
Grantham
10 May 2003

A remarkable run by Tom Duffield to win the U15 boys 400metres was the highlight of some excellent Lincoln Wellington performances on the first day of the County Championships at Grantham. In breezy conditions he flew round the track to score by a huge margin in a tremendous time of 53.7seconds - well inside the qualifying time for this year's English Schools Championships at Don Valley, Sheffield in July. Ashley Smith finished 3rd in the same race in 60.3. Another medal went to Duffield with a leap of 5.26m to take the long jump title. With four athletes on the start line owning personal best times below four minutes the senior mens 1500m was the quality field of the day. Wellington duo Tom Doe and Richard Blagrove fought out a very tight finish with the former just proving the stronger in 3.58.9 to the latter's time of 4.00.1.

There was a very good win by Malc Bramhall in the veteran mens 400m hurdles in 61.0 and in the U17 mens 1500m Danny Roome battled on well to draw clear in the closing stages in a personal best 4.22.0 with Sam Delaney 6th in 4.57.1. In the U13 age group Dan Cocking cleared 1.35m to win the high jump title and there was a terrific effort from Jake Coyle to finish a close 2nd in the 1500m in a splendid time of 4.57.5 with Jon Humberstone 4th in 5.34.4. Ricky Lea finished 2nd in the senior 100m in 12.1, Steve Swaby was runner up in the high jump with a clearance of 1.60m and Steve Marshall was 2nd in the javelin and 3rd in the high jump. There was a good tussle for the minor placings in the U20 400m with Robert Hindle grabbing 2nd place in 51.0 from Jason Lovell 3rd in 55.1. Michael White finished 5th in12.2 in a good class U20 mens 100m. Ashley Smith fared best of the Wellington quartet in the U15 boys 1500m with 4th place in 5.00.7. Jack Ramsden was 9th, Ryan Smith 10th and Beren Cross 13th.

For the womens team Lydia Chamberlin picked up a brace of victories in the U17 300m hurdles in 48.4 and the 300m flat in 44.4. Jenny Pacey easily won the senior womens shot with 11.00m and Rowena Harrison had a convincing win in the 400m in 60.4. Nina Swaby was runner up in the 400m hurdles in 71.2 and also finished 3rd in the 100m in 14.2. Some good veteran performances were headed by Lesley Bryant with a double in the discus (37.71m) and shot (10.73m). Denise Timmis won the 400m in 65.8 from Kathy Warhurst 2nd in 71.3 and Dot Fraser 3rd in 81.3. Warhurst also took the 1500m in 5.27.5. There were wins in the U20 age group for Lucinda Pitcher in the 1500m in 5.00.3 and for Danielle Bryant in the shot with 9.27m. The latter was also 2nd in the triple jump with 9.28m.
