English Schools XC Championships
Stanmer Park, Brighton
8 March 2003

A long and arduous cross country season reached its finale at the English Schools Championships on a tough course at Stanmer Park in Brighton. Wellington athletes made a big contribution to the County squad and all performed well in this top quality meeting with virtually every race comprising over 300 athletes. In the senior girls race Lucinda Pitcher completed an excellent winter with another good effort for 33rd place. And in the same race Sarah Coates ran very strongly to finish a fine 58th in her first year in the age group. Alice Thomas found the company pretty tough but kept on well to finish 242nd. Wellington provided the bulk of the County team in the junior girls age group and Harriet Needham ran an eye-catching race to finish a splendid 45th. Liz Harley followed her home in 114th place with Rachel Humberstone 198th and Kelly Gilbert 246th. Rebecca Jackson crossed the line 250th and Josina Clarke was close behind in 273rd spot to ensure that all six scorers were provided by the club. Danny Roome has had a particularly successful winter and another solid effort saw him back in 66th place in the intermediate boys race. Tom Herbert and Mark Plaskett both did pretty well to finish 193rd and 273rd respectively and all three will be eligible for the same age group next year. James Dray produced a promising effort to finish 100th in the junior boys race and looks like a useful prospect. Tom Duffield was some way further back in 228th but this was not his scene and more will be heard of him over 400m in the summer.

In the intermediate girls race, Tash Johnson finished 180th, ahead of Emily Taylor who was 288th. And Will Strangeway suffered a little in the senior boys race and was a bit below par in finishing 270th. He is another who will be seen to much greater effect on the track.
