Lincs County XC Champs
Boston
5 January 2003

There was no evidence of Christmas hangovers for the Lincoln Wellington athletes who competed at the Lincolnshire cross country championships at Witham Country Park, Boston. And at the end of the afternoon seventeen of the squad had finished in medal winning positions with a remarkable eight individual titles in the bag.

One of a number of high class performances came from Tom Doe who was never out of the first two in the junior/senior men's race and found a decisive turn of foot in the closing stages to pull clear of Grantham AC's in-form Paul Coleman. Richard Diamond in 27th place was the only other Wellington senior to finish. His father, Jim Diamond was the only Wellington vet to finish and placed 36th. There was a great start for the club in the first race which was the combined boys and girls under 11 contest. The highly promising Chelsea Coyle flew round the course to beat not only her own sex but also the boys as well. She looks a seriously good prospect for the future. Jon Humberstone was close behind in 2nd place (1st boy) and Mary Ann Phillips also ran extremely well to finish in 3rd spot overall. The under 13 girl's team was without Blue Haywood but still dominated. Charlotte Hanson was first across the line closely followed by Rebecca Jackson. Lara Thomas picked up 4th spot and Helen Penistan 9th and Alex Caskie 10th completed a fine team effort. The U15 girls almost matched that performance with Rachel Humberstone 2nd, Sarah Kimpton 3rd and Kelly Gilbert 4th easily scoring in the team contest with Josina Clarke 8th and Katie Campion 11th providing good support. Wellington's team domination continued in the U17 women's race. Sarah Coates maintained her excellent current form and crossed the line in 1st place looking quite untroubled. Tash Johnson 4th, Emily Taylor 5th and Alice Thomas 6th completed the winning squad. In the junior/senior/veteran women's race Lucinda Pitcher was never far off the lead and finished 2nd overall (1st junior) with Rebecca Cansdale having a good run to finish 2nd in the junior race. Tracy Carnall was the club's sole senior woman, coming home in 5th place. The club's veteran women's contingent won their title with Margaret Thompson leading the squad home in 2nd place from Kathy Warhurst 4th and Jo Campion 9th. Jane Ramsden came back 13h with Pat Kimpton 14th and Dot Fraser 17th.

The most remarkable team effort for Wellington came in the U15 boy's race with five athletes in the first seven home. Danny Roome just outpaced Josh Stone after a good tussle for the first two places and Tom Herbert and Mark Plaskett were not far back in 3rd & 4th. Tom Duffield came next in 7th with Ashley Smith 12th and Alex Thomas 18th. The Wellington duo in the U17 men's race were dominant from the start. Will Strangeway pulled away on the 2nd circuit to cross the line comfortably ahead with Ian Kimpton remaining clear in 2nd place after a couple of tumbles en route. The Wellington U13 boy's had to settle for the silver medals with Jake Coyle finishing 8th, Jack Ramsden 9th and Beren Cross 10th.

Following on from her team gold medal at the European cross country championships Wellington's Rachael Nathan has received a further call from the National selectors. She will represent England under 20's in an international contest at Seville in Spain on Sunday 19th January.
