Potsdam
15-25 August 2002
Lincoln Wellington athlete Dorothy Fraser has landed a magnificent five medal haul at the European Veterans Track and Field
Championships which were held this year at Potsdam, Germany. And in the process she achieved her season's objective by
becoming the European 400 metres champion in the W65 category with a winning time of 79.99 seconds - almost four seconds
clear of her nearest rival. Further individual medals came in the 200m where she won silver with a time of 34.58 and in the
100m where she collected the bronze medal in 16.31. She also ran the anchor leg for the successful Great Britain squad in
the 4x400m relay to add another gold to her collection and a final medal came when she was part of the silver medal winning
British team in the 4x100m relay. Denise Timmis produced some consistent performances in the W40 category. In the
100m she
was 4th in her semi-final in 13.52 and in the 200m she picked up 5th place in the semis in 27.83 - both times being
season's best performances. Another 4th place came in the 400m semi-final in 63.1 and in her final individual event she was
6th in the long jump with 4.76m. She did not leave empty handed however as she contested both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays
in which the British squads ran well to take the silver medals behind the winning German teams. Betty Stracey was the third
Wellington athlete to compete at the Championships and she found some tough opposition in the endurance events. In the
5000m final she finished in 8th place in 23.11.5 and in the 1500m she crossed the line 11th in 6.38.31.
