LWAC Road Race Series
Race 3 Report
17 July 2002

Wellington athletes were again in dominant form at the third event in the Club’s evening road race series at Yarborough Leisure Centre. Gary Johnson was pretty impressive in the senior men’s race drawing clear over the final lap to win convincingly in 16 minutes 28 seconds. Chris Bertins did well to finish 2nd in 16.54 with second claim club member Nick Marsh in 3rd spot in 16.57. In the veteran men’s race Bernie Bontoft came out on top in 18.13 with Wellington’s Adie Marston finishing strongly for 2nd place in 18.19. Sleaford’s Emma Lord won the women’s race in 22.46 well clear of the home club’s Tracy Carnall and the veteran women’s race was also won impressively by Ann Kirtley of Hallamshire Harriers in 19.08 with Ann Gilroy 2nd and Pat Kimpton 3rd.

The junior races were run over the 3000m circuit and Ian Kimpton maintained his current fine form with a runaway victory in the under 17 men’s race in 9.52. Tom Herbert also looked strong in the under 15 boy’s race and came back in 10.26, well ahead of Mark Plaskitt who was 2nd in 11.11 and Dexter Haywood 3rd in 11.21. Elliott Haywood took the under 13 boys event very comfortably in 11.17 from Jake Coyle and Jack Ramsden who both recorded a time of 11.45. There was another sensational run by 10 years old Blue Haywood in the under 13 girls race. She flew round the circuit in 11.41 to win by almost a minute from Charlotte Hanson in 2nd place with 12.37 and Lara Thomas 3rd in 12.54. The under 15 girls race was much closer with Rachel Humberstone just keeping on the stronger to cross the line in 11.51 with Sarah Kimpton close behind in 2nd place in 11.57 and Josina Clarke 3rd in in 12.45. In the under 17 women’s race Sarah Coates had a comfortable run round to win in 11.29 from Natasha Johnson who was having her first race after a long lay-off and was pleased to come home in one piece in 12.14.
