Sixteen year old Rachael Nathan of Lincoln Wellington Athletic Club has achieved her main target for the season by retaining the 3000 metres title in the intermediate girls age group at the English Schools Championships. After a fairly steady opening 200 metres the Wellington youngster took up the running and soon had the field in indian file. A couple of 75 second laps then opened up a big lead for her and, urged on by packed crowd at Nottingham's Harvey Hadden Stadium, she steamed round the final circuit to cross the line with a massive 16 second advantage in a time of 9 minutes 35.61 seconds and in the process sliced over four seconds from the previous best Championship performance - a record which had stood since 1988.

Following her win Rachael has now accepted an invitation to represent England Schools in a home countries international meeting against Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in Glasgow on Saturday.
