Northern Mens Div 1 match 3
Grimsby
6 July 2002

After strong performances in their first two Northern League Division One matches of the season the Lincoln Wellington men's team suffered a major setback in the third match at Grimsby. They finished in sixth place from the eight teams competing and are now fourth in the in the league overall - still very creditable in their first season in the top division. Richard Blagrove was the club's only winner during the afternoon and after taking the 'B' 800m in impressive style in 1.57.9 he also ran well in the 1500m to finish 3rd in 4.03.3. Gary Johnson picked up 4th place in the 'A' 800m in 1.58.9 and Jason Hall returned from injury to finish 6th in the 'B' 1500m in 4.21.8. Steve Blagdon performed well in the 100m to finish 2nd in 11.5 and was also 3rd in the 400m in 51.8. Ricky Lee is still looking for his best form but was 4th in both the 200m in 24.1 and the 'B' 100m in 11.9. The steeplechase was a good event for the club with Andy Wood pacing his run well to finish 2nd in 9.38.6 and Dean Houlton recording his best time for five years to finish 3rd in the 'B' race in 10.35.8. Wood turned out again in the 5000m to run a very satisfactory 15.58.6 for 8th place, comfortably ahead of Simon Bell who was well below par when finishing 3rd in the 'B'; race in 16.37.4. A good effort from Daniel Hewitt gave him 3rd spot in the 400m hurdles in 60.3 with Steve Swaby taking 3rd place in the 'B' race in 65.0. The 110m hurdles was not so fruitful. Adey White was 7th in the 'A' race in 20.8 and Dan Hewitt turned out again to grab 5th spot in the 'B' race in 20.7. Other track points went to Adie Marston who was 5th in the 'B' 400m in 54.7 and Michael White with 7th position in the 'B' 200m in 25.1.

With one or two exceptions the field events are the Achilles heel of the men's team and once again a big burden fell on a few shoulders. Phil Mackie and Steve Swaby picked up useful points in the long jump and high jump without either being in their best form and the same applied to James Gilbert whose 1.70m clearance in the high jump was some way off his best. Adey White and Dan Hewitt performed heroically to cover the remaining field events between them with the pole vault proving to be the best event in which White was 5th with 3.50m and Hewitt 3rd in the 'B' event with 3.00m. A major search for more new jumps and throws talent will be needed if the club is to challenge for Division One honours in the coming seasons. There was a respectable performance by the 4 x 400m relay squad who finished 3rd in 3.34.6 but a disappointing afternoon ended with disqualification for the 4 x 100m relay team for a faulty changeover on the final leg.
