Northern Mens Div 1 match 2
Gateshead
8 June 2002

A weakened Lincoln Wellington men's team scrapped for every point in their second Northern League division one match of the season at Gateshead. And despite not scoring a single victory a succession of creditable performances saw the squad finish in 4th place at the end of the afternoon to consolidate their fine start in the top division.

Steve Blagdon worked particularly hard and finished 2nd in the 100m in 11.4, 2nd in the 200m in 22.6 and 5th in the 400m in 52.7 as well as grabbing 4th spot in the 'B' shot with 8.95m. Daniel Hewitt also played a key part in the team effort. He was 5th in the 3000m steeplechase in 10.58.2, 4th in the 'B' 400m hurdles in 61.0, 5th in the polevault with 3.10m, 3rd in the 'B' hammer with 20.70m and 6th in the'B' javelin with 30.72m - a terrific effort. There were two good runs in the 800m with Richard Blagrove picking up 3rd spot in the 'A' race in 1.56.6 and Tom Doe finishing 4th in the 'B' race in 1.58.3 before going on to finish 5th in the 1500m in 4.03.0. Team captain Gary Johnson ran well for 4th in the 'B' 1500m in 4.09.4. Jim Ayuba picked up good points with 2nd place in the 'B' 200m in 23.5 and Ricky Lea was 5th in the 'B' 100m in 11.8. Adie Marston proved his versatility with 7th place in the 'B' 400m in 54.0 and 6th spot in the 'B' 5000m in 17.59.2. Dean Houlton also worked hard for the team and after finishing 4th in the 'B' 3000m steeplechase in 11.45.6 he took 8th place in the 5000m in 17.23.4. In the 110m hurdles a good effort from Richard Duffin gave him 2nd spot in the 'B' race in a useful time of 17.9. He was also 6th in the discus with 27.56m and 7th in the javelin with 35.15m. James Gilbert proved his worth to the team as a specialist high jumper and cleared 1.80m to take 4th place. Steve Swaby was 3rd in the 'B' event with 1.65m and also 4th in the 'B' long jump with 5.50m. Adey White was kept pretty busy and finished 2nd in the 'B' pole vault with 3.00m to begin with and was then 5th in the 110m hurdles in 20.5, 4th in the 'B' discus with 26.96m, 7th in the hammer with 23.90m and 7th in the shot with 9.20m.
