Manchester
25/26 May 2002
There were some high class Wellington performances at the North of England Championships which were held in the
impressive new City of Manchester stadium, shortly to host the Commonwealth Games. In the under 17 women's 1500 metres
Rachael Nathan did not take too long to work her way to the front of the pack. She was soon well clear and won the
title unchallenged in 4.33.17 to become the first track champion in the new stadium. Josh Stone did tremendously well
to win his first area championship medal in the under 15 boy's 1500m. He ran strongly throughout to cross the line in
3rd place and pick up the bronze medal in 4.33.35. Danny Roome only just missed out on the medals when finishing a fine
4th in the under 15 boy's 800m in 2.12.29 after taking 2nd place in his heat in 2.13.64. Steve Blagdon was also in top
form. In the under 20 400m he recorded a personal best 49.73 for 4th place in his heat and he went on to take 6th spot
in the final in 49.87. He also produced a couple of good efforts in the 200m finishing 2nd in his heat in 22.5 and 4th
in the final in 22.6. Michael White flew off the blocks in the under 20's 100m but he faded in the closing stages to
finish 5th in his heat in 11.85. Matt Hughes was 6th in his heat of the under 17 men's 800m in 2.06.0 and Darren Coldron
crossed the line 7th in his under 17's 200m heat in 24.6.
