Northern Womens Div 3EC match 1
South Leeds
5 May 2002

The Lincoln Wellington senior women's squad was in fine form at their opening Northern League division three match of the season at Leeds. Regrettably an absence of numbers in the younger age groups seriously hampered the team effort and at the end of the afternoon the Wellington contingent were in 4th place from the six teams competing. With a stronger numerical representation better results will surely follow in the remaining matches.

Several athletes had pretty busy afternoons and Sharon Waller led the points chase with wins in the 100 metres hurdles in 18.3, the triple jump with 9.62m and the B long jump with 4.67m. She was also 2nd in the 100m in 13.3 and the B high jump with 1.20m. Nina Forney won the B 200m in 28.5 and the B triple jump with 9.04m and collected further points with 2nd place in the 400m hurdles in 70.9 and 4th spot in the high jump with 1.20m. There were a couple of good victories for Denise Timmis who scored in the B 100m in 13.6 and the B 400m in 65.8 and also finished 2nd in the long jump with 4.72m. Annette Bell notched a winning double in the 1500m (5.10.8) and 3000m (10.56.7) and Kathy Warhurst was also in double form with B string wins in the 800m in 2.41.4 and in the 1500m in 5.23.6. Jacqui Brown recorded a useful winning time of 2.21.5 when crossing the line first in the 800m and Liz Ward confirmed her early season form by taking the 400m in 62.3 and finishing runner up in the 200m in 27.6. Sarah Garrett picked up a win in the B 100m hurdles in 19.6 and collected further points in the discus, javelin and shot. And Dot Fraser had a steady run round in the 3000m to finish 2nd in the B race in 15.36.7.

Sarah Coates was the only Wellington under 17 competing but a good effort in the 800m gave her 2nd place in a personal best time of 2.32.3. For the under 15 squad there was a win for Sarah Kimpton in the B 1500m in 5.44.5 and she was also 3rd in the javelin and 6th in the discus. Rachel Humberstone ran well to finish 3rd in the A 1500m in 5.40.2 and she also picked up 5th place in the B long jump with 3.45m. Liz Samways was kept busy doing four individual events and placed 4th in the long jump (4.13m) and 200m (29.8) and 5th in the 100m and shot. There was a promising run from Katie Campion to take 3rd place in the B 800m in 2.49.0 and in the A race Kelly Gilbert finished 5th in 2.55.0 before collecting points in the discus and shot.

Apart from two or three people on the injured list most of Wellington's squad will be in action at next weekend's Lincolnshire County Championships at Grantham. With most of the club's athletes having already showed good early season form it will be a major shock if the club is not heavily represented on the podium.
