Lincs League T&F 1 - Lincoln
14 April 2002

Lincoln Wellington athletes launched the new season in some style with a remarkable 28 individual wins at the first Lincolnshire League meeting of the season at Lincoln's Yarborough track. Tom Herbert quickly got the club on the scoresheet when leading almost throughout to win the under 15 boys 3000 metres in 10.59.7. Elliott Haywood did very well to take the under 13 boys race in 11.23.3 and John Siddons was 2nd in the senior contest in 9.23.0 closely followed by Dean Houlton with a personal best 9.36.5 for 3rd place. Matthew Richardson continued his good form of last season by winning the U13 100m in 14.5 and in the same age group Beren Cross took the 800m in 2.44.7. Josh Stone made all the running to win the U15 boys 1500m totally unchallenged in 4.34.7. And in the same age group Mark Plaskett also led from the gun in the 800m to record his first ever victory in 2.30.0, just holding off a very strong late rally from Sam Delaney who finished 2nd in 2.31.1. In the U17 men's 200m Darren Coldron (24.3) just edged home from Anthony Sherwin (24.4) in a blitzing finish but these positions were reversed in the 100m where the latter scored in 12.2 a whisker in front of his club-mate who recorded 12.3. Another win in the same age group went to Matt Hughes who finished very well to pick up the 1500m in 4.30.2

One of the days most impressive winners on the track was Steve Blagdon who powered home in the U20 100m in 11.4 and then took the 200m in a speedy 23.2. He beat useful fields with some ease and looks set for a good season. There was also a fine effort in the 100m from new member Michael White with a time of 11.8 and he looks like a useful addition to the senior sprint squad. Carl Longley won the senior men's discus with 35.49m and Adey White notched a field event double by taking the pole vault with 3.20m and the hammer with 26.75m. A final win for the men's team came in the 800m where a well timed challenge by Adie Marston took him across the line in front in a good early season time of 2.02.3. He has now moved into the veteran ranks and looks capable of making quite an impact at that level.

There was a memorable track debut for 10 year old Blue Haywood in the U13 girls 1500m. She scorched round the track in a club record 5.27.2 to win by a very wide margin and already looks a big prospect for the future. In the U15 age group Kelly Gilbert led all the way to win the 800m in a personal best 2.45.5 and Rachel Humberstone scored in similar fashion in the 1500m in 5.40.9 - also taking a chunk off her previous best time. New member Lucy Chamberlin won the 75m hurdles in 13.2. Sarah Coates set off rather ambitiously in the U17 3000m. Her pace inevitably dropped in the later stages but she battled on well to win in 11.50.8. There were no problems for Alice Thomas in the 800m and she led throughout to win very easily in 2.36.4. Hayley Fox had a good clearance of 2.40m to win the senior pole vault and Nina Forney won the 100m in 13.4. Elizabeth Ward opened her new season with a stylish win in the 200m in 27.6 and looks set for a good campaign. Claire Gregory also did pretty well to make all the running in the 1500m for a useful winning time of 5.08.5. In the club's strong veteran category there were wins for Denise Timmis with 4.61m in the long jump and for Kathy Warhurst who recorded 5.24.6 in the 1500m.
