Dublin
23-24 March 2002
Matt Bowser's final competition of a memorable cross country season was as a representative
of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland
junior men's squad in the World Cross Country Championships at Leopardstown racecourse near Dublin. A series of excellent
performances in all the top races of the winter, including a terrific 13th place in the European Championships, had earned
him a well deserved place in the British squad but this race as they say was something completely different. With the Kenyan
and Ethiopian athletes setting a ferocious gallop from the start none of the European athletes were ever able to reach a
challenging position. Although he was around the halfway mark in the 140 strong field in the early stages Bowser could never
make any real headway and he was hanging on in the final stages before crossing the line 84th, two places behind county
team-mate Steve Ablitt from Grantham who was just the stronger in the last few metres. Although the Wellington athlete was
a little disappointed post-race this was still a significant achievement. He was 4th scorer for the Great Britain team which
came out on top of all the European nations competing and with the seemingly overwhelming superiority of the African nations
in the endurance events that is the realistic target for the moment.
