Twenty three more athletes from Lincoln Wellington represented their county teams at the inter-counties meeting and with
every race being comprised of huge numbers of the best athletes in the country the level of competition was as tough as it
gets. Another terrific performance came from Rachael Nathan in the under 17 women’s race. She looked sure of a medal when
contesting the lead in the later stages but was caught by a couple of fast finishers in sight of the line. 5th place at the
finish in her first year in a new age group was still a highly creditable effort. The improving Sarah Coates also performed
very well in this race and beat some class athletes when coming back 63rd. The Wellington U17 men’s trio all ran well with
Jason Hall taking 72nd spot ahead of Roy Smith 99th and Matt Hughes 131st. In the U15 boy’s race Wellington provided five of
the team of eight athletes. Ian Kimpton ran very strongly to finish 117th closely followed by Josh Stone who was 133rd. Shaun
Dunn headed the remaining trio in 241st place with Wesley Caton 250th and Gary Cruickshank 257th. There were only two
Wellington representatives in the U 15 girl’s event and Emily Taylor in 204th place just held off Sarah Kimpton who worked
through well in the closing stages to finish 217th. There was a pretty good effort from Rebecca Cansdale in the junior women’s
race to finish in 87th spot and in the senior men’s event Simon Bell had a satisfactory run to finish 182nd with Gary Johnson
a little further back in 293rd place but pleased to finish the race after recent injury problems. The four Wellington runners
in the senior women’s team were led in by Annette Bell in 197th place. Claire Gregory finished 224th with Kathy Warhurst 246th
and Jacqui Brown 270th. Rachel Humberstone did well to finish 178th in the U13 girl’s contest with Kelly Gilbert 260th and
Katy Campion 289th. And in the U13 boy’s race Jack Ramsden kept going in determined style to finish 282nd.
Dean Houlton just missed selection for the inter-counties but proved his current good form by taking 51st place in the top
class Alsager 5 mile road race in a personal best time of 27minutes 25 seconds.

Wollaton Park, Nottingham

Lincoln Wellington athlete Matt Bowser has achieved his winter ambition and will represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland
in the junior men’s race at the World cross country championships which are due to take place at Leopardstown racecourse near
Dublin on March 23rd/24th. The selectors took little time in giving Bowser their approval after he had finished an excellent
4th in the World Trial race at the Reebok Inter Counties meeting at Wollaton Park in Nottingham. He was close behind the
leaders from the start of the 8 kilometre race and at halfway was a clear 3rd. Although he was overhauled by county team-mate
Steve Ablitt from Grantham AC in the closing stages he comfortably held on to 4th spot to secure his place for Dublin. He
will now contest the National cross country championships in Bristol shortly before departing for two weeks warm weather
training in Portugal with the full GB squad prior to the World championships.
