In the under 17 men's race the promising Jason Hall was
particularly impressive with a very strong second half of the race taking him well clear in the closing stages. A splendid
team result for Wellington saw Matt Hughes in 5th place and Roy Smith 6th to win the A team medals. And with Jason Lovell
8th, Will Strangeway 9th and Richard Ellis 12th the club also picked up the silver medals. There was a similar result in the
under 15 boy's event. Josh Stone ran very well for 2nd place, closely followed by Ian Kimpton 3rd and Shaun Dunn 4th to
complete the winning A team. Gary Cruickshank followed this trio in 5th with Wesley Caton 6th and Tom Herbert 8th collecting
the silver medals. Mark Plaskett 13th and Sam Delaney 14th completed a very strong Wellington squad in this age group.
Another notable achievement was an excellent win in the under 13 boys race by Tom Duffield. He has not been in serious
training for long and looks a very promising athlete. Joe Mayall came next for Wellington in 10th position with Fraser Oliver
alongside him in 11th. These two were hotly pursued by Jack Ramsden 12th and Sam Naughton 13th with Beren Cross not far
behind in 16th place.
In the senior men's race Tom Doe was back in his best form with a very good run for 2nd place. Gary Johnson turned in an
encouraging display for 8th place and Dean Houlton in 11th spot completed the silver medal winning team. Adey Marston finished
strongly for 18th place with Steve Chapman 22nd after a break in his training and Richard Diamond crossing the line 33rd.
Jim Diamond had a satisfactory run in the veteran's race to finish 23rd. The veteran women managed a full squad and some good
performances produced the gold medals. Jacqui Brown ran particularly well to finish 2nd with Kathy Warhurst in 5th spot and
Jo Campion and Pat Kimpton a little further back in 11th and 13th places respectively. The Wellington squad were also
successful in a rather depleted senior women's race. Annette Bell produced a good effort to take the runner-up position and
was well supported in the team event by Sarah Garrett in 4th place and Tracey Carnall 6th. In the under 17 women's race Sarah
Coates picked up 2nd place and managed to stay just ahead of Alice Thomas who finished 4th. And in the under 15 girl's event
Emily Taylor emerged best of the Wellington trio in 4th place with Sarah Kimpton 8th and Katie Duffield 11th. Rachael
Humberstone fared best of the Wellington quartet in the under 13 girl's race with 6th position. Kelly Gilbert was right
behind her in 7th with Katy Campion 8th and Josina Clarke 10th. A final medal went to Rebecca Cansdale who was runner-up in
the under 20 women's race.
Wellington's two junior internationals both missed out on appearing at the County Championships for different reasons. Matt
Bowser will be running for England at an international event in Spain on Sunday 13th Jan. and decided not to compete on the
West Common. And Rachael Nathan was in attendance at a Great Britain junior track and field squad get together weekend at
Bath University and was therefore unable to race.
