Awards Evening
14 December 2001

Lincoln MP Gillian Merron was the guest of honour at Lincoln Wellington Athletic Club’s successful annual awards evening which took place at the Carholme Grandstand Community Centre. The current strength of the club was well confirmed by the wide range of athletes chosen to receive the various trophies and by the quality of performance required to earn them.

After a remarkable year on the track and over the country it was not too surprising that 15 year old Rachael Nathan was the principle recipient. Her 3000m victory for GB U20’s in a match against the USA in a British record time for her age gained her the Dimbleby trophy for the most outstanding performance of the year by any club athlete and also the James Hebdon Bowl for the outstanding performance of the year by a female. Her victory in the U15 girls National Cross Country Championships won her the Joan Barnsdale Trophy for the outstanding cross country performance by a female and she was also awarded the Hodson Coaches Shield for committee club athlete of the year.

The Cecil Thurlby Trophy for the oustanding male cross country performance went to Matt Bowser and he was also voted best all round junior man. In accordance with Wellington tradition a special trophy to mark his recent selection for the National Cross Country team was also presented to him. Another athlete well in the trophies was U13 sprinter Matthew Richardson who received the award for most promising new member, the trophy for most league points scored and also the U13 boys best all rounder cup. The DeFreitas trophy for the best performance by a club athlete in Lincolnshire went to James Gilbert for his 1.90m high jump clearance in a Lincolnshire League competition and the same athlete also received the Jim Litteover Shield for the outstanding field performance by a male. Rowena Harrison’s successful year was recognised with the award of the Nicholson Sprint Trophy for the outstanding athlete in the U20 age group and she also received the best female sprinter award. The men’s equivalent of the latter was won by Ricky Lea.

Multi-eventer Jenny Pacey was a deserved winner of the Stafford Trophy for the outstanding female in both track and field competition and she also received the U20 women’s best all round performer award. Adrian White was another athlete to collect a brace of trophies. He was the best all round performer among the senior men and also collected the Timmis Trophy for the outstanding male track and field athlete. The Gary Warhurst Shield for the most improved middle distance athlete of the year was won by 16 year old Jason Hall for some outstanding steeplechase performances and the Bob Charlton ladies field event trophy went to Hayley Fox for a club record pole vault clearance of 2.50m. The veterans track and field athletes of the year were Denise Timmis and Andy Shepherd.

On the road Annette Bell’s performances merited a trio of awards. She was female roadrunner of the year, veterans Queen of the Road and received the Kristiansen Trophy for the outstanding female road race performance. Family domination of the road running trophies was completed when Simon Bell’s performance in the London Marathon won him the Zatopek Trophy. The veteran King of the Road was the enthusiastic Robin Johnson who contested all of the club’s 5k road races round the cycle track at Yarborough during the summer.

One of the club’s most prestigious awards is the Ernie Harrison Trophy for loyalty and long service and this went to club president Doug Bramhall who almost single-handedly organised the club’s summer road race series. The Norman Trophy for the best team performance was won by the club’s U20 men’s quartet who were successful at the Northern Cross Country Championships at Blackburn. Training trophies for outstanding effort went to Sarah Kimpton and Mark Plaskett with the U15 girl’s league points award going to Hayley Brylewski who was also best all round athlete in her age group. The remaining best all round performer awards were won by Richard Duffin (U17), Josh Stone (U15), Kathy Warhurst (senior women), Steph Bramhall (U17), and Rachel Humberstone (U13).
