National Cross Country Relays
Mansfield - 10 November 2001

Colossal performances from Rachael Nathan and Matt Bowser were at the forefront of some outstanding Lincoln Wellington team results at the National cross country relay championships at Berry Hill Park, Mansfield. And in two of the age groups Wellington squads had the distinction of being top Northern teams.

The junior men's race was packed full of talent and Tom Doe ran a cracker on the first leg to bring the team back in 5th place in a time of 9 minutes 15 seconds for the 3000metres circuit. After a rather disappointing summer he is now showing every sign of getting back in top form and has definitely got high class potential. Matt Bowser then took over on leg two and tore round the course in 8.55 to come back in 2nd place and record the 4th fastest leg of the whole race. Richard Blagrove ran a hard final leg in 9.37 but dropped a couple of places and the squad finished a highly creditable 4th , well ahead of many of the big name clubs in British athletics. Fifteen year old Rachael Nathan produced another stunning effort in the combined under 17 girls/ under 20 women's race. Running the first leg she tracked the highly rated Louise Damen, four years her senior, until past halfway before easing to the front and returning to the changeover with a comfortable advantage. Her time of 8.40 for the 2500m circuit was the fastest in the entire race by an under 17 and would have placed her 4th fastest in the under 20 age group. Sarah Coates and Alice Thomas both did well on the remaining two laps of the under 17's race returning identical times of 10.37 to place the squad an excellent 8th at the end of the race and once again top club from the North of England. In the under 20 category Rowena Harrison had a solo run on the opening leg and a time of 10.05 for 15th place was a very good effort from the 400m specialist.

There was some consistent running from the under 15 boys with Josh Stone coming back in 19th place in 6.55 on the first leg of their 2000m circuit Ian Kimpton kept the same position on leg two in 7.13 and an excellent effort from Shaun Dunn on the final leg saw him back in 7.10 for 23rd place overall. A useful Wellington senior women's team did well to finish in 25th spot against some hot opposition. Claire Gregory came home 39th in 12.00 on a very competitive leg one before Kathy Warhurst picked up nine places on leg two in 12.28. A good final leg by Annette Bell gained a further five places in 11.37 to come through to 25th spot at the finish line.

The under 17 men's team was led off by Jason Hall with a time of 10.16 for 33rd place on the opening leg of the 3000m circuit. Matt Hughes picked up four places with 10.27 on leg two but Richard Ellis' time of 10.50 on the final leg cost him five places and the team finished in 34th spot overall. The under 13 boy's race was run over the minimum 2000m circuit and the Wellington youngsters gained valuable experience of performing at the top level. Jack Ramsden was 46th on leg one in 8.42, Joe Mayall improved to 43rd on leg two in an identical time and Michael Bland completed the trio with 9.16 on the final leg for 39th place.

The senior men fielded an incomplete team but Gary Johnson had a good run on the 1st leg to finish in 17.17 for the 5000m lap. Sprinter Steve Blagdon enjoyed a good run out on leg two and returned in 20.19 before final team member Simon Bell recorded a pretty useful 16.58 on the third of the four legs to complete the squad. The U-15 girls team was also one person short. Natasha Johnson ran well to finish 20th on the opening leg in 8 minutes exactly with Sarah Kimpton completing the 2nd leg in 8.52 for 29th place.
