Also breaking news on 2001 national rankings
Four more of Wellington’s distance squad were in action in a match at Hinchingbrooke
Country Park where the Eastern Counties team was opposed by teams from the RAF
and Cambridge University. Simon Bell wore the RAF vest on this occasion and had
a pretty good run over the 10 kilometre course to finish in 6th place
in 33.12 against some very useful opposition. A little further back Dean Houlton
representing the East also ran well to finish 19th in 35.02 and fully
justified his initial selection at representative level. The women’s race was
over a shorter six kilometre circuit and Wellington’s Annette Bell and Kathy
Warhurst both turned out for the East. The former finished in 9th
place in 29.14 and the latter crossed the line 12th in 29.56 helping
the Eastern Counties to secure a team victory in the event.
After a curtailed
track season Tommy Doe is now back in full training and made his winter debut in
the top class Reebok Challenge race at Sennellys Park, Birmingham. This was
something of a baptism of fire but in a massive field over a testing course he
was very pleased to finish in 49th place (10th junior) and
only just behind one or two big names in his age group. If his training
continues to go well he should be in top form for the major races after
Christmas.
The National rankings
for the recently concluded track and field season have now been confirmed with
several prominent Lincoln Wellington performances among them. In the under 17
girls listing 15 year old Rachael Nathan is clear top ranked at 3000metres with
her best time of 9.31.69 and this also places her a remarkable 4th in
the under 20 age group. She also appears in 4th spot in the 1500
metres with 4.27.5 and in 12th place in the 800m with 2.12.8. Mathew
Bowser’s best 1500m time of 3.51.09 placed him 12th in the under 20 rankings
for that event and his 8.29.53 gave him the same position in the 3000m list.
Multi-eventer Jenny Pacey’s top score of 4017
points in the heptathlon placed her 15th in the rankings for that event in the
under 20 age group.
The under 17 men’s rankings are not yet official but
1500 metre steeplechaser Jason Hall, who only took up his event last season, is
known to be in 12th place with his best time of 4.34.77 and it is
also certain that high jumper James Gilbert will be prominent in the listings
with his best effort of 1.95m.

A fine 3rd placing for Lincoln Wellington’s Matt Bowser on his debut run in an England
vest was more than sufficient to justify his selection for the National team.
Competing in the junior men’s race in the first Belgian Cross-Cup race of the
winter season in Ghent he was always well in contention among the leading group.
And although not quite able to peg back the two leaders in the closing stages he
was only four seconds adrift at the finish in a very good time of 21 minutes 3
seconds for the 6830 metres course. He also had the added bonus of being the
first of the England quartet to cross the line.
