National Road Relays - Sutton Park - 27/28 October 2001

After a couple of low key outings Lincoln Wellington’s Rachael Nathan began the serious part of her winter season with a blistering performance in the under 17 girls race at the National Road Relay Championships at Sutton Park Birmingham. After taking over from team-mate Sarah Coates at the end of the first leg in 26th position she tore through the field to reach a remarkable 4th place at the end of the 3800 metres circuit. Her time of 13 minutes 2 seconds was more than 40 seconds quicker than any other athlete in the race and easily won her the medal for the fastest lap.

Some consistent running from the U-15 boys team placed them a very creditable 26th from the 55 teams completing their race. Josh Stone came back 12th on the opening leg in 13.32 and Ian Kimpton followed up with 14.02 on leg 2, losing one place in the process. The final leg was completed by Shaun Dunn whose sprint finish saw him cross the line in 14.46.

There was a good opening leg of 12.33 by Jason Hall in the U-17 mens race to give him 12th place from the 59 starters. Matt Hughes (13.55) and Richard Ellis (13.52) lost some ground on the final two legs however and the team finally finished in 31st place overall. The U-15 girls team was led off by Natasha Johnson who returned in 27th place with a time of 9.13 for the shorter lap. Emily Taylor (9.37) and Sarah Kimpton (10.06) completed the final two legs to place the team 37th at the finish. The club’s U-13 teams were all relatively inexperienced and considering the level of competition did very well. The boys finished in 38th place with Beren Cross (9.53), Alex Thomas (11.05) and Jack Ramsden (9.55) all running enthusiastically.

In a very big field the girls A team comprising Katie Campion (10.52), Kelly Gilbert (10.24) and Rachel Humberstone (10.02) finished in 49th place with the B team of Josina Clark (10.47), Kerry Driver (11.01) and Olivia Hind (11.51) not far behind them in 54th spot.

The senior womens squad had been in action in their relays on the previous day. In a very high standard race Annette Bell led off for the A team and returned in 52nd place from 86 starters in a time of 16.40. Kathy Warhurst was hampered by blisters on leg 2 and a time of 17.46 lost her three places at the handover. Rowena Harrison did very well on leg three to pick up 3 places in 17.38 before Jacqui Brown brought the team home in 53rd spot with a time of 18.18 on the final leg. Anne Gilroy took the first leg for the B team and despite some breathing difficulties managed to finish 79th in 19.07. Vicky Roach improved three places on leg two in 20.32 and Mandy Culyer gained a further place on the third leg with 21.22. New member Hayley Jackson did very well on the final leg to pick up four more places in 20.18 for a placing of 71st overall.
