Lincoln Wellington junior Matt Bowser spearheaded a great start to club’s Lincolnshire
league season with a convincing win in the junior/senior men’s race over the
rain soaked meadows of Witham Country Park, Boston. He disputed the lead throughout
going comfortably and his speed in the closing stages was decisive. In a good
class field Dean Houlton ran a well paced race to cross the line 10th with veteran
Jim Diamond completing a fairly thin senior Wellington representation in 72nd
place. Another expected but totally comprehensive victory went to Rachael Nathan
in the under 17 women’s race. She very quickly spreadeagled the field and eventually
came back two minutes ahead of her nearest pursuer. Nichola Hale and Alice Thomas
both ran well to finish 4th and 5th respectively to win the team event and Nicky
Dale returned to running over the country with 10th spot at the line. Jason Hall was also in dominant form in the under 17 men’s race and drawing
clear from halfway in impressive style he had a big lead at the finish. Matt
Hughes made a very positive start and after losing a couple of places he came
back strongly in the closing stages to grab 3rd place. Richard Ellis suffered
a bout of stitch in the later stages but kept going well for 9th place to complete
the team win. There was a thrilling finish to the under 15 girls race. Emily Taylor led
for most of the way and was still clear entering the final stages. Natasha Johnson
then produced a remarkable finishing burst which took her to the front in the
last 50 metres for a spectacular win. An eye-catching 5th place from Sarah Kimpton
easily gave Wellington another team win. In contrast to the men there was a big Wellington turnout in the junior/senior
women’s race and a further team victory was duly notched. Claire Gregory led
the squad back with a good effort for 3rd place with Kathy Warhurst not far
behind her in 4th and Rowena Harrison completing the winning squad in 6th. Jacqui
Brown did well to take 8th place with Holly Needham 12th and Rebecca Cansdale
returning after a lay-off in 14th spot. Vicky Roach picked up 19th place with
Sarah Garret 20th and Mandy Culyer 22nd. And enthusiastic veteran Pat Kimpton
completed the squad in 28th place. There was a terrific effort from Ian Kimpton to take 2nd place in the under
15 boys race. He ran strongly throughout the race and is improving all the time.
Shaun Dunn was next home in 5th place with Tom Herbert 10th ,Gary Cruickshank
15th and Mark Plaskett 20th. Josh Stone’s return will make this squad a pretty
useful one. Rachel Humberstone is in good form at the moment and finished a
good 2nd in the under 13 girls race with Kelly Gilbert a little further back
in 9th. For the first time in the Lincolnshire league there were races for under 11’s.
Fraser Oliver ran a race full of promise to take 3rd place in the boys race
and Laura Thomas also did very well to finish in 10th spot in the girls event.
Many of the squad will be in action on Sunday at the National road relays in
Sutton Park Birmingham where some top class opposition is sure to be encountered.
