The Lincolnshire cross country season got under way with Louth Athletic Club
hosting their traditional early October meeting on the undulating London Road
circuit. Lincoln Wellington athletes were in excellent early season form and
notched up four individual victories and a number of other very promising performances. A particularly fine run came from Josh Stone in the under 15 boys race. After
a sensible start he was not too long before he moved to the front and running
very strongly on the uphill sections he drew well clear in the second half of
the race to win unchallenged. Considering this is his first year in the under
15 age group this was a splendid effort and he looks a very good prospect. Ian
Kimpton led for a while after the start and remained prominent throughout the
race to finish a good 3rd and Shaun Dunn worked through well to 4th place at
the line to complete the winning team. The trio were well supported by Tom Herbert
who also did well to move through to a very good 5th place at the finish. There was another dominant Wellington team performance in the under 17/ senior/
veteran women’s race. Rachael Nathan made her seasonal debut and went clear
from the gun to win in impressive style by a huge margin. And the winning team
was completed by two more under 17’s with Nichola Hale finishing in 5th place
just in front of Alice Thomas who was 6th. Veteran Pat Kimpton followed her
younger team-mates home in a very respectable 24th place. Under 20 athlete Matt Bowser is hoping for a productive season and got a testing
race to open his campaign. He was closely attended by Grantham A.C.’s highly
regarded Paul Coleman throughout the race and the pair were virtually inseparable
crossing the line with the Wellington athlete just getting the verdict. Dean
Houlton had a very sound run to move through to 4th place in the later stages
and Michael Bowen completed another winning team in 13th spot. Jim Edwards returned
to action after a lay-off and was pleased to finish in one piece a little further
down the field. The final Wellington individual winner was Jason Hall in the under 17 mens
race. He started fairly cautiously but soon showed ahead and his strength on
the hills was decisive. He drew clear in the second half of the race to win
in fine style and looks set for a good season. In the under 15 girls race Natasha Johnson was always in the chasing group
and finally crossed the line in 3rd place with a useful effort coming from Sarah
Kimpton who was not too far back in 5th. And there was another good Wellington
performance in the under 13 girls event with Rachel Humberstone running very
well to pick up 3rd place. Much tougher tasks lie ahead for many of the squad
but this was certainly a very satisfactory start to the new season. at website@lwac.org.uk
