Five titles from the eight events in which they fielded complete teams was
a highly satisfactory return for the athletes of Lincoln Wellington at the County
Road Relay Championships at Lincoln’s Yarborough Leisure Centre. The club’s
under 15 boys were first on the winner’s podium with Sean Dunn coming back with
a good lead on leg 1 in a time of 8 minutes 9 seconds. Tom Herbert drew further
away on leg 2 (8.36) and Ian Kimpton ran the fastest leg of the entire race
on the final leg (8.04) to complete a convincing win. Gary Cruickshank (8.16)
and Mark Plaskett (8.47) also ran well for the B team who unfortunately could
not field a 3rd leg runner. The under 15 girls squad also won quite easily with Emily Taylor leading in
the opening leg runners in 5.28. Natasha Johnson followed her with the fastest
leg of the race in 5.20 to extend the lead. And Sarah Kimpton went round in
5.43 on the final leg to secure the victory. A strong under 17 men’s team was never in any danger and after Roy Smith (9.48)
and Matt Hughes (10.04) had completed the first two legs it was left to Jason
Hall to cruise round the final leg in 9.45. A plucky run from Steph Bramhall (11.23) brought the under 17 girl’s squad
home in 2nd place on the opening leg of their race. Strong runs from Nicola
Hale (9.05) and Sarah Coates (9.16) on the remaining legs were more than enough
to secure another team success. The Wellington women’s team picked up gold and silver medals in their race.
Kathy Warhurst led off for the A team and returned in 11.06. Jacqui Brown recorded
11.10 on leg two and Annette Bell’s 10.46 on leg 3 was the fastest of the race
to complete a wide margin victory. Mandy Culyer came back in 12.52 on leg 1
for the B team with Sarah Garrett following up with 13.51on leg 2 and Anne Gilroy
completing the squad in 12.14 on the final leg. The senior men’s team had to settle for 2nd place in their race. Dean Houlton
ran well for 2nd spot on leg 1 in 14.18 but Gary Johnson was a bit below par
on leg 2 and a time of 14.52 left Simon Bell too much to do on the final leg.
A good time of 13.42 still left him nearly a minute adrift at the finish. The
Wellington B team did pretty well to finish in 4th place with Steve Chapman
recording 14.26, Malc Bramhall 16.01 and Robin Johnson 17.58 after a last minute
call-up. Holly Needham ran a good time of 12.00 on the first leg of the under 20 women’s
race but after Vicky Roach ran 12.54 on leg two the club were unable to field
a 3rd leg runner. Wellington are developing a strong junior section and both inexperienced under
13 teams did well to finish in 2nd places. Berren Cross (5.35), Jack Ramsden
(5.40) and Joe Mayall (5.52) all did well for the under 13 boys A team with
Alex Thomas (5.59) completing leg 1 on his own for the B team. For the under 13 girls Kelly Gilbert (5.53) and Olivia Hind (6.15).had good
runs on the first two legs before Rachel Humberstone’s fastest leg of the race
in 5.33 just failed to get her in front at the line. Kate Campion (5.59) and
Kerry Driver (6.29) also produced useful efforts for the B team and the club
now has a good ‘production line’ in place thanks to the efforts of coaches Larry
Allen, Linda Ellis and latterly Dave Humberstone.
