Mission accomplished! A superb all-round team effort in their Northern League division two promotion match at Oldham has propelled the Lincoln Wellington men’s squad into the top division next year for the first time in the club’s history. Coinciding with the club’s 90th anniversary this year this could be viewed as a masterly piece of timing.
The Wellington boys led the eight teams involved for virtually the whole match before a strong finish by the squad from Derby A.C. in the last few events just got them in front at the end by a slender 12 points. With the top two teams to be promoted the required result was never really in doubt for Wellington and they were a hefty 75 points clear of 3rd placed Wirral AC.
The best track result for the club came in the 800metres with Richard Blagrove taking the A race in 1.59.8 and Tom Doe scoring in nice style in the B event in 2.02.5 before finishing 4th in the B 400m in 53.8. On a very windy day very few personal best times were threatened and although Matt Bowser won the 1500m with total authority his time of 4.12.3 was his slowest of the season. Gary Johnson ran strongly for 2nd spot in the B race in 4.19.7.
Ricky Lea was a good 2nd in the 100m in 11.7 and was also 4th in the 200m in 23.9 and there was a strong run from Steve Blagdon to win the B 100m in 12.0. More good points in the sprints came from Jim Ayuba with runner up spot in the B 200m in 24.5. Jason Hall did well in the 3000m steeplechase to finish 5th in 10.19.8 with Chris Bertins recording 10.48.7 for 2nd place in the B race. The 5000m was tough going in the windy conditions and Simon Bell and Adie Marston worked hard to finish 4th in the A and 3rd in the B contest respectively.
Dan Hewitt had a busy afternoon despite an arm injury picked up in the pole vault where he cleared 2.80m for 2nd place in the B event. He was also 3rd in the 400m hurdles in 60.8, 2nd in the B 110m hurdles in 20.5 and 2nd in the B javelin with 33.93. Further track points went to Malc Bramhall who was 2nd in the B 400m hurdles in 63.2 and to Adey White who miraculously managed a personal best 19.4 for 4th spot in the 110m hurdles. The latter followed with a pole vault personal best of 3.50m for 2nd place and was also 5th in the javelin with 35.47m and 2nd in the B hammer with 22.55m.
The best field result came in the discus with Nigel Winchcombe winning with 39.59m and Karl Longley backing up well to win the B contest with 35.26. The same pair collected two 3rd places in the shot with 11.69m and 9.35m respectively and the former was also 2nd in the hammer with 46.13m. A good clearance of 1.85m gave James Gilbert 2nd spot in the high jump but an injured knee hampered Richard Duffin in the B event and he was disappointed with 1.45m for 7th place.
Phil Mackie leapt a useful 6.04m for 5th place in the long jump with a personal best 5.59m giving Luke Lovell 3rd place in the B contest. Mackie also did well with 11.85m for 4th spot in the triple jump with Steve Swaby collecting 4th B place with 10.98m. Despite some shaky changeovers the 4x100m relay squad finished 2nd in a good time of 44.9 seconds and the 4x400m team recorded a season’s best time of 3.35.7 when also finishing runner’s up. The format of division one for next year is still being discussed but it is certain that some very tough opposition will be encountered.
