More Miscellaneous reports/results from August 2001
Lincoln Wellington’s Matt Bowser continued a memorable season when he was selected to run the 3000 metres for the North of England under 20 men’s team against the Midlands and the South at Ipswich. After a slow early pace, with no-one wanting to make the running, the latter half of the race speeded up considerably. A thrilling last lap, run in 60 seconds, saw Bowser’s powerful finishing burst take him through to 2nd place at the line in a time of 8 minutes 37.9. Although this was outside his personal best he had the great satisfaction of defeating the athletes who had finished 1st and 2nd in the senior boys 3000m at the English Schools Championships in July where Bowser had the misfortune to lose one of his running spikes early in the race and finally finished in 4th place.
The high quality midweek open meetings at Stretford, Manchester continue to attract athletes from Lincoln Wellington looking for fast times. Annette Bell contested the 3000 metres at the latest meeting and following a well paced run she was delighted to record 10 minutes 20.1 - her best time for the distance for four years. Kathy Warhurst has gradually been finding her best form following her run in the London Marathon earlier in the year. In the 1500m she crossed the line in 5.11.29 which was not only a season’s best for the distance but also her best time since August 1998.
Wellington athletes were also prominent in the final race in the Advance Performance 5K road race series hosted by Eye Community Runners. Dean Houlton had another very good run to finish in 13th place in a field of nearly 200 in a time of 16 minutes 53 seconds. Annette Bell was 3rd senior woman in 18.58 and Kathy Warhurst was 5th on the day but won the series prize for 1st veteran woman over 35. Vicky Roach also picked up an award for being 1st under 20 in the series after finishing in 24 minutes exactly. And Mandy Culyer as not far behind in 29th spot in the women’s race in 24.29.
The Wellington men’s team have an important final match this coming weekend as they are involved in the Northern League division 2 play-off to determine promotion to the 1st division. The eight team match, originally scheduled for Cudworth, will now take place at Oldham and with the Wellington squad at near full strength the team will be crossing the Pennines full of hope that this year they will make one of the top two places to take them into the top division for the first time.
