Miscellaneous reports/results from August 2001
Lincoln Wellington’s Matt Bowser has confirmed his high potential by becoming the North of England U-20 men’s 3000meteres champion. In a very high class race at Stretford, Manchester he shadowed the pacemaker until the back straight for the final time before unleashing a powerful finishing burst which took him well clear at the line. His winning time of 8.29.53 was a personal best for the distance and will place him well up the National rankings. There were some other good Wellington performances at the same meeting.
Richard Blagrove won the British Milers Club ‘B’ 800m in very good style. He went to the front soon after the bell and won relatively unchallenged in 1.53.9. Adie Marston is returning to his best form after a quiet spell and won the ‘C’ graded 800m in a seasons best 2.03.5 with a powerful finish over the final 100metres. Rowena Harrison and Jacqui Brown were drawn together in another heat of the 800m and after a titanic battle for 3rd place the former just prevailed in a personal best time of 2.20.24. with the latter inches behind in 4th in a seasons best 2,20.4.
Another terrific Wellington performance came from 16 year old Jason Hall who shattered his personal best time for the 1500m steeplechase. Competing in the AAA’s U-17 championships at Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield Jason lined up in a big field of seventeen athletes and was towards the rear for the first two laps. He then began to move through the field and a very strong finish saw him cross the line in 7th place in a splendid time of 4.34.8, carving a huge ten seconds off his previous best in the process. This would have given him an English Schools qualifying time had he achieved it earlier in the year but he should have the consolation of a place in the National rankings at the end of the season.
Veteran athlete Kathy Warhurst had a great day at the Welsh Open Veterans Championships at Cardiff. She won the 1500m in a seasons best 5.16.4 – leading all the way. And she went on to score in similar fashion in the 800m in 2.39.5. Wellington’s road running squad have also been in action with Simon Bell picking up 5th place in the Advance Performance 5K at Werrington. Dean Houlton had a steady training run for 26th place in 16.56 and Annette Bell was 3rd women across the line in 18.32. A little further back Kathy Warhurst finished 9th women in 19.31 and Mandy Culyer recorded a personal best 24.25 for 33rd place.
Three more of the club’s squad lined up for the Newark half marathon. In very testing conditions for road running Brian Fox was pleased to finish in 1hr 32mins and Jim Diamond was also delighted to return in 1.47 – his best effort over the distance for some time. Ann Gilroy was not in her best form and was rather disappointed with 1hr 44 mins. Pat Kimpton contested the Holbeach 10k and clocked a very satisfactory time of 52 minutes.
