Under 20 International Match - Great Britain v USA - Northwood Stadium, Stoke - 19 August 2001

Fifteen year old Lincoln athlete Rachael Nathan has leapt to third place in the all-time Great Britain 3000 metre rankings for under 17 girls. In her final race of a fairytale season she was competing for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland under 20 team in a match against the USA under 20's at Northwood Stadium Stoke-on-Trent.

The Lincoln Wellington youngster had stayed just off the pace for most of the race but with three hundred metres to go the accelerator was pressed and she was immediately clear. Sprinting down the home straight in impresive style she crossed the line about 25 metres ahead of the top ranked American in a new personal best time of nine minutes 31.69 seconds.

Considering she was between two and four years younger than the rest of the field this was a remarkable end to a remarkable season in which she has remained unbeaten in all her races at distances from 800m to 3000m.

Rachael wil now have a well deserved break from training and competition before beginning her preparations for the forthcoming cross country season where her main target will be the intermediate girls race at the English Schools Championships next March
