Northern Inter Counties Championships
Scunthorpe - 18,19 August 2001 - Report
Sixteen Lincoln Wellington athletes were selected to represent Lincolnshire at the Northern Inter-Counties track and field championships at Quibell Park, Scunthorpe. The outstanding performance came from Matt Bowser who brushed aside a pretty useful 1500metres field to win with total authority in a time of 3.59.8.
Jason Hall followed up his recent fine effort at the AAA’s championships with another excellent performance in the 1500m steeplechase. In a high class field he kept going very well to take the bronze medal in 4.35.47. And another Wellington medallist was James Gilbert in the high jump with 1.85m for 3rd place. This was a splendid effort from a relative novice and a good Winter’s training and coaching should see him threaten the 2.00meteres mark next season.
There were several other good performances from the Wellington athletes with Daniel Hewitt picking up 4th place in the 400m hurdles in 59.52 and Luke Lovell also taking 4th spot in the triple jump with a useful effort of 11.51m. Ricky Lea was just off his best in the 100m and finished 5th in 11.36 and Richard Blagrove had quite a disappointing run in the 800m to finish 7th in 1.59.84 – well outside the 1.53.9 he had run at Stretford a few days earlier.
In the women’s match Rowena Harrison finished well to take 6th place in the 400m in a new personal best time of 58.31. Jacqui Brown ran a well paced race to cross the line 4th in the 800m in 2.20.98. And in the U17’S 800m there was a big personal best for the promising Sarah Coates who finished 7th in 2.35.01 reducing her best by eight seconds in the process. Nichola Hale raced clear of the field in the U17’s 3000m in the early stages but she was a little ambitious and the chasing pack reeled her in. In the circumstances 4th place in 11.39.0 was still a creditable effort.
Jenny Pacey had a busy afternoon and finished 5th in the long jump with 5.10m,7th in the triple jump with 10.18m and 8th in the 100m hurdles in 16.4. Kathy Warhurst ran strongly in a very good 1500m field and was rewarded with a season’s best time of 5.13.46 and there was a useful pole vault clearance of 2.10m by Hayley Fox for 4th place. Nicky Dale was 6th in the U-15 javelin with 24.22m and Hayley Brylewski contested the two U-15 sprints and finished 7th in the 100m in 13.70 and 6th in the 200m in 27.60.
