The Lincoln Wellington mens’s team clinched a narrow nine point victory over rivals Derby A.C. in their final Northern League Division Two match of the season at Barnsley. They have therefore won the league title for the second successive year and now go into a play-off match with the winners and runners up in the other three regional 2nd divisions to determine promotion to Division one. Ricky Lea was again on top form in the sprints, winning the 100 metres in 11.5 and the 200m in 23.5, Jimo Ayuba picked up the ‘B’ 200m in 23.6 and two good efforts from Steve Blagden saw him take the 100m in 11.3 and finish 3rd in the 400m in 52.2.

Richard Blagrove notched an impressive win in the ‘A’ 800m with a time of 1.54.4 and Andy Shephard followed up in the ‘B’ race with another winning effort in 1.59.1. Blagrove was also in action in the 1500m taking 3rd place in 4.08.1 with Simon Bell in 3rd spot in the ‘B’ contest in 4.16.2. Good points came in the steeplechase in which Andy Wood ran very strongly for 2nd place in 9.40.8 and Jason Hall was miles clear in the ‘B’ race in a personal best 10.16.4.

There was a fine effort from Daniel Hewitt to finish 2nd in the ‘B’ 400m hurdles in 59.4 and he followed up with a clearance of 2.90m for 2nd place in the pole vault and a useful throw of 38.31m for 3rd position in the javelin. Malc Bramhall was 3rd in the ‘A’ 400m hurdles in 61.7 and also 5th in the ‘B’ 400m in 55.0. Adey Marston and Dean Houlton both ran pretty well in the 5000m. The former finished strongly to grab 4th place in the ‘A’ race in 16.49.6 and the latter ran a well paced race on his return from a short injury lay off to finish 4th in the ‘B’ race in 17.09.5.

The 110m hurdles is not one of the club’s strongest events but Adey White and Simon Dalton picked up useful points with two 4th places. The former was also in the points in the field with wins in the ‘B’ pole vault (2.60m) and ‘B’ hammer (31.03m) and 2nd places in the ‘B’ javelin (33.62m) and ‘B’ slot (8.97m).

As usual Nigel Winchcombe was a big points scorer. He took the hammer with a good throw of 50.69m, the discus with 37.45m and was 3rd in the shot with 11.58m. Another good field performance came from James Gilbert who was 2nd in the high jump with 1.90m. Steve Swaby was 4th in the ‘B’ event with 1.60m and also 5th in the ‘B’ long jump with 5.45m. Phil Mackie was 4th in both the ‘A’ long jump with 5.82m and the ‘A’ triple jump with 11.86m and Luke Lovell was runner up in the ‘B’ triple jump with 10.90m.

Some extensive baton changing practice paid dividends for the 4x100m relay squad who produced a slick performance to score in 44.4. The 4x400m team was not quite so successful but picked up 3rd place in 3.31.3. Team manager Gary Johnson deserves plenty of credit for the effort he has put in to produce his successful squads but his only reward at the conclusion of this match was the traditional dunking in the water jump!
