World Veterans Athletics Championships - Brisbane - July 2001

Five Lincoln Wellington veteran athletes have now returned home following the long haul to Brisbane, Australia where they were in competition at the World Veteran Championships. The star individual performance came from thrower Nigel Winchcombe who was delighted to win a bronze medal in the hammer with a fine throw of 52.10metres. He also finished 6th in the discus with 37.87m and 16th in the shot with 11.18m. He was hopeful of a further medal in the weights pentathlon comprising hammer, discus, shot, javelin and 35lbs weight but an injury to his lower back whilst warming up for the first event hampered him considerably and he had to settle for 6th place with 3023 points.

As the European Indoor 400m champion in her age group Dorothy Fraser also had medal hopes. Unfortunately her training had been brought to a standstill in the weeks leading up to the competition due to a severe bout of sciatica. Her participation was still in doubt shortly before the competition started and although she managed to perform with credit her results were not surprisingly below her normal standard. In the 200m she was 5th in her heat in 34.91 and in the 400m she finished 6th in 80.89. She did however have the consolation of a bronze medal in the 4x400m relay when she ran the opening leg for the Great Britain team which finished in 3rd place.

Denise Timmis set herself a particularly punishing schedule and competed in a total of 6 events. In the 100m she qualified from her heat in 13.77 and then finished 8th in her semi-final in 13.92. She also qualified for the 200m semi-final in which she placed 4th in 28.86. In the 400m she was 5th in her heat in 63.67 and in the long jump she finished in 9th place with 4.68m. She lined up in both relay squads and in the 400x100m the British team just missed out on the medals by finishing 4th in 53.95. Compensation came in the 4x400m event where Timmis was part of the silver medal winning team which crossed the finishing line in 4.08.35.

Judi Stafford was restricted by injury to competing in the pole vault only. She vaulted a brave 2.10m for 4th place, just missing out on the medals which were achieved with heights that Judi has cleared this year.

Jim Edwards had arguably the toughest task of the quintet as he lined up in the marathon. An excellent performance saw him complete the race in a very creditable time of 3 hours 14 minutes 38 seconds for 116th place in a big field. The Wellington athletes would like to acknowledge the generous sponsorship granted to them by Lincolnshire County Council and Lincoln Sportsmans Club.

Nigel and Dot would like to thank Mick Rampton (pictured with Nigel and Dot). He works as a theraputic masseur at the Lincoln Complimentary Medical Centre on the High Street. Mick spent many hours dealing skillfully with various aches and pains and helping them be in the best shape possible for performing in Australia. He also made a generous donation towards the club booklet earlier this year.
