Home countries schools international - Tullamore, Eire - 21 July 2001
Fifteen year old Rachael Nathan of Lincoln Wellington Athletic Club has begun her international career in spectacular style. Competing for England Schools in a home countries international track and field match at Tullamore in Ireland she was a hugely impressive winner of the girls 3000 metre race in a new personal best time of nine minutes 41.08 seconds.
The Lincoln athlete was quite content to follow the early pace and appeared to be going extremely easily on the shoulder of her English team-mate for the first four laps. A decisive burst of speed down the home straight with three laps remaining produced no response from the rest of the field and she drew further away as the race progressed to cross the finish line a long way in front and with twenty three seconds in hand over the runner up.
She may have a much sterner test this coming weekend as she has been selected for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland under 19 team who are competing at Dole in France against their counterparts from that country in the same age group. She will thus be lining up against athletes up to three years older but on the times she has achieved her selection is fully merited and the experience she will gain should prove invaluable.
