Lincoln Wellington middle distance athlete Jacqui Brown made a belated seasonal reappearance at the third Lincolnshire League fixture of the season at Lincoln’s Yarborough track. Following a lengthy injury lay-off a smooth success in the senior women’s 800 metres in 2.23.9 provided plenty of promise of better to come in the next couple of months.

Other wins for the seniors came from Hayley Fox in the pole vault with a good clearance of 2.19m and from Amanda Culyer who won the 1500m in 6.10.2. There were veteran category successes for Kathy Warhurst in the 800m in 2.36.0 and for Pat Kimpton in the 5000m in 24.46.8.

Caroline Barratt was another athlete to re-appear following a long lay-off and a win in the under 20 shot with 10.25m was evidence that she remains in good form. Jenny Pacey was runner-up with 10.07m and also placed 2nd in the high jump with 1.58m. Track victories in the under 20 age group went to Rebecca Cansdale in the 800m in 2.45.2 and Vicky Roach in the 1500m in 6.03.0.

Nicky Dale won the under 17’s javelin with 24.74m and Nicola Hale ran well to place 2nd in the 1500m in 5.16.6. Alice Thomas was a little below her best in the 800m and finished 3rd in 2.39.4. Emily Taylor was soon clear of the field in the under 15’s 1500m and won very easily in 5.25.9. Natasha Johnson was 2nd in the 800m in 2.34.5 with Sarah Kimpton 4th in 2.55.9. There was a personal best 2.53.7 for Kelly Gilbert when finishing 3rd in the under 13 girls 800m and Rachel Humberstone was runner up in the 1500m in 5.53.7.

Richard Ellis got a depleted men’s squad off to a winning start with a personal best 17.48.9 in the under 17’s 5000m. Roy Smith also notched a personal best when taking the 1500m 4.30.5 and there was a pleasing effort from Matt Hughes, who has been plagued with injury for a number of weeks, but scored impressively in the 800m in 2.10.2. Jason Lovell picked up 3rd place in 2.15.6. Richard Duffin was runner up in both the 100m in 12.1 and the 200m in 25.0 and a useful javelin throw of 35.85m gave him 3rd spot in that event. Luke Lovell was 2nd in the long jump with 5.18m and grabbed 3rd place in the 100m in 12.6.

Another personal best went to Ian Kimpton who ran strongly for 2nd place in the under 15 boys 1500m in 4.45.0. Wesley Caton finished 5th in the 800m in 2.27.9 with Tom Herbert 6th in 2.34.1 and Mark Plaskett 7th in 2.40.2. Michael Bowen ran aggressively in the 1500m but tired a little on the final lap and was runner up in the under 20 race in 4.31.7. The senior 1500m went to Adey Marston in 4.27.0 with Dean Houlton 2nd in 4.36.2.

New member Kevin Howie made an impressive debut with a clearance of 3.50m in the pole vault being closely followed by Adey White’s 3.20m effort for 2nd place.

Two Wellington road runners travelled to Brugge for the veteran road races. Jim Diamond was delighted with his time of 51 minutes for the 10 kilometre race and although Anne Gilroy was less pleased with two hours twelve minutes for the 25K race the very hot weather was no help at all to the distance runners. Any road runners wishing to get in shape for next years Brugge meeting or other races in the future can join in with Jim and Anne at training sessions commencing at 6.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting out from the athletics track at Yarborough Leisure Centre.
