A match winning all round performance by the Lincoln Wellington men’s team took them to a massive 300 points score in their second Northern League division two match of the season at Sheffield’s Woodbourn Road Stadium. With match one winners Derby AC. having a below par day and finishing fourth the Wellington squad are two points clear at the top of the table at the halfway mark.

The race of the day on the track was the 1500m where Matt Bowser set off as though the hounds of hell were in pursuit. He was only just outside two minutes at 800metres, well clear of the chasing pack, but not too surprisingly his stride then shortened a little and it was club-mate Richard Blagrove who emerged as the main challenger. After a thrilling tussle down the home straight it was Bowser who was given a marginal verdict but the timekeepers were unable to split the pair and both were credited with 3.59.2 – a personal best for Blagrove(On the left in picture below) who seems to be running into top form.

There were some great sprint results for Wellington with Ricky Lea winning the A 100m in 11.5 and coming a very close 2nd in the 200m in 23.1. New member Steve Blagdon ran brilliantly to take the B 100m in 11.8 and the B 200m in a personal best 23.1. Andy Wood ran well for 3rd place in the 3000m steeplechase in 9.59.2 and followed up a little later with 6th place in the 5000m in 16.22.2.

Youngster Jason Hall made a fine steeplechase debut and won the B race in a club under 17 record of 10.29.4. He may well have found his best event.

In the B 5000m Dean Houlton ran strongly throughout to finish 6th in 16.50.3 – one of his best times for the distance. Tom Doe just dipped under the two minute mark in the 800m when finishing 3rd in 1.59.6 and he was also 3rd in the B 400m in 54.1. Ady Marston finished 4th in the B 800m in 2.06.3 and 5th in the A 400m in 55.0.

Daniel Hewitt retains plenty of ability despite not training regularly and a good time of 60.8 saw him just last home in the B 400 metres hurdles. He also scored in the B pole vault with a clearance of 2.60m. Malc Bramhall was 2nd in the A 400m hurdles in 62.0 and was also runner-up in the B high jump with 1.55m. Adey White has developed into a key all-rounder for the club and after winning the 110m hurdles in a personal best 21.9 he was 2nd in the pole vault with 3.20m, 1st in the B hammer with 27.09m and 2nd in the B javelin with 37.70m.

Nigel Winchcombe scored heavily in the throws winning the hammer with 40.15m, the discus with 37.18m and finishing runner-up in the shot with 11.66m. Karl Longley also picked up some good points. He was 5th in the javelin with 40.15m - his best throw for several years – and finished 2nd in the B discus with 36.15m and 3rd in the B shot with 9.73m.

Phil Mackie did well with 3rd places in both the triple jump (11.77m) and long jump (5.55m). And Steve Swaby backed him up with 2nd place in the two B events with 5.35m and 11.73m respectively. Luke Lovell equalled his personal best of 1.60m to take 5th spot in the A high jump. Both the 4x100m and the 4x400m relay teams finished in 2nd place to conclude a successful meeting and at this stage the Wellington squad are looking well set for another bid for promotion to Division one.
