North of England Men's League Division 2SE match - Saturday 2 June 2001 - Preview
At the Woodburn Road Stadium in Sheffield, the second round of the Northern League Division 2 SE match takes place. In the first round match at Lincoln on May 5th, the final match result was:-.
1) Derby 296 points, 2) Lincoln Wellington 293, 3) Barnsley 234, 4) Hallamshire 201, 5) Doncaster and Stainforth 170, 6) Bingley 78
It was frustrating to see an early lead in that match gradually whittled away, finally being decided by the 4 x 400m relay.
Lincoln Wellington men's team were champions of Division 2 SE last season, something we want to repeat again. Tomorrow's match will be very important. Another Derby AC win would make the rest of the season that much harder.
The good news is that Lincoln Wellington have virtually a full strength team for tomorrow's match.
Gary Johnson will be team manager, not competing this time round, choosing to concentrate on managing the team without the distraction of preparing for his own races.
Daniel Hewitt makes a welcome return to the team and will compete in the 400m Hurdles and Pole Vault. Under 17 athlete Jason Hall makes his senior mens team debut and his first outing over the 3000m steeplechase, partnering last times A string winner Andy Wood.
A good points haul should come from the short sprints, with Ricky Lea (100m A string winner last time), this time partnered by Under 20 athlete Stephen Blagdon who reached the final of the Northern Junior champs 100m last weekend.
Loughborough student Tom Doe and Adie Marston will double up in the 400m and 800m while another of the club's Loughborough students Richard Blagrove and Matt Bowser will tackle the 1500m. Dean Houlton, fresh from his fine run in the Saxilby 10km road race last week, runs in the 5000m partnered by U17 athlete Mike Bowen who makes also makes his senior men's team debut.
Mike will not be the youngest team member though. This will be Luke Lovell (16) who will try the high jump for the first time.
There have been some injury scares midweek. The in form long and triple jumper Phil Mackie will hopefully be fit to challenge for more personal bests. In the heavy throws, Nigel Winchcombe will be firing on 3 cylinders instead of 4, following a freak accident during training last Tuesday throwing the hammer. He will be more than ably partnered in the discus by Carl Longley who makes his first appearance for the team this season.
Former decathlete Steve Marshall will partner Adey White in the Javelin again and will have his first outing over 110m Hurdles for 10 years!! If you can make it, come to Sheffield and support the team! We will be meeting at Yarborough Leisure Centre at 9.30 am, before setting off.
