A seriously depleted Lincoln Wellington women’s team finished a disappointing sixth in their opening Northern League match of the season at York. A concerted effort from the full squad will be required over the remaining two matches if relegation to division three is to be avoided.

Liz Ward provided one of the day’s bright spots when running strongly to win both the A 200m in 27.5 and the 400m in 61.2. Another excellent performance came from Rowena Harrison who outclassed the opposition in the B 400m with an impressive winning time of 59.7. Denise Timmis made a good contribution to the points by finishing 4th in the A 100m in 14.1, 2nd in the B 200m in 28.9 and 3rd in the long jump with a useful leap of 4.87m.

There was good news and bad news from the pole vault. Hayley Fox cleared a personal best 2.10m for 2nd place in the A event. But in the B competition ‘Charlie’ Donald cleared 1.80m for 2nd place and promptly suffered an awkward fall off the edge of the landing bed and had to be taken to hospital with a badly damaged ankle. It appears that she will be out of action for some considerable time.

Kathy Warhurst was totally committed to the chase for points and was 2nd in the B 800m in 2.39.2,6th in the A 1500m in 5.34.5 and 4th in the A 3000m in 11.19.2. She also picked up some useful points in an unfamiliar role in the discus and javelin. There was an eye-catching performance from youngster Nicola Hale in the B 3000m. After a fairly ambitious start which saw her clear of the whole field after the opening lap she might have been expected to fade in the later stages. Although passed by a few athletes she kept going very well however and finished up 2nd B runner in 11.19.8 – a very promising effort.

Ruth Bampton took 4th place in the A 800m in 2.43.5 and Vicky Roach was 4th in the B 1500m in 5.55.6. Nina Forney was the only other senior to compete and she finished 4th in the B 100m in 14.6, 2nd in the B long jump with 4.13m and 5th in the triple jump with 7.95m. The 4x100m relay squad comprising Timmis, Forney, Harrison and Ward were a class above the opposition and finished a long way clear in 52.8. The same foursome immediately turned out again in the 4x400m relay and despite their previous exertions ran well to finish 2nd in 4.18.0.

The numbers in the younger age groups were even thinner than the seniors. Alice Thomas was a good 3rd in the under 17’s 800m in 2.34.1 and Steph Bramhall was equal 2nd in the high jump with 1.37m and 4th in the discus with 19.38m. Emily Taylor finished 3rd in the under 15’s 800m in 2.38.0 and Natasha Johnson also placed 3rd in the 1500m in 5.19.9.
