The Lincoln Wellington men’s team made a solid start to their new season’s Northern League campaign with a close up second place in the opening match at Yarborough athletics track. After being 20 points clear at one stage of the afternoon the lead was gradually whittled away and with the match result resting on the outcome of the 4x400m relay the Wellington squad’s 3rd place in that event left them a slender three points behind Derby AC at the conclusion .

Jim Gillespie launched the Wellington challenge in the best possible way by strolling home in the 400 metre hurdles in 65.0 seconds.

Malc Bramhall was harder pressed in the B race but still came out on top in 64.1 to claim maximum points. When the pole vault produced another maximum points haul with winning clearances by Adey White (3.10m) and Malc Bramhall (2.20m) the home club were soon on the top of the leader board.

Ricky Lea was in fine form in the sprints and despite a powerful headwind he blasted down the straight to snatch the 100m in 11.8 and followed up later in the 200m with another win in 23.5. Jim Ayuba picked up good points with a win in the B 100m in 12.5 and 2nd place in the B 200m in 24.5. The 1500m was another productive race for Wellington with Matt Bowser making most of the running to score in a personal best 4.04.6. Tom Doe chased hard all the way to win the B race in 4.08.4.

There were further maximum points score in the 3000m steeplechase which was won impressively by new member Andy Wood in 10.04.0 with Gary Johnson easily taking the B race in a personal best 10.28.3. In a quality 5000m race Simon Bell ran well to pick up 3rd place in 15.46.6 and Dean Houlton was not far off his best with 16.59.1 for 4th spot in the B race. Richard Blagrove was just outside the two minute mark with 2.00.5 for 4th place in the 800m with Jamie Dixon running a sound tactical race for 3rd place in the B event in 2.13.2.

The 400m was won in a very quick time and Kris Harrison was hanging on at the end to finish 5th in 54.2. Adie Marston ran strongly in the B race for 3rd place in 54.7. The 110m hurdles is not one of the strongest Wellington events but there were good points nevertheless from Simon Dalton with 3rd place in the A race and from Adey White who finished 2nd in the B contest.

Apart from the pole vault the only field event win came with Nigel Winchcombe’s throw of 48.63m in the hammer. He was also 4th in the shot with 11.23m and 4th in the discus with 29.70m. Phil Mackie and Richard Duffin both picked up 4th places in the long jump events and Malc Bramhall and Steve Swaby did likewise in the high jump – the former with a new club veteran record of 1.65m. Adey White followed up his pole vault win by scoring valuable points in the hammer, discus, shot and javelin to complete a hectic afternoon. And youngster Luke Lovell made his men’s team debut with 10.85m for 4th place in the triple jump. New member Steve Marshall completed the squad with 3rd spot in the B javelin with 28.20m.
