Despite near arctic conditions there was a highly satisfactory start to the new track and field season by the Lincoln Wellington squad. In the opening Lincolnshire League match at Grantham Wellington vests were soon prominent with Liz Ward notching a fine sprint double in the U20 age group when taking the 100m in 13.1 and the 200m in 27.0. Rowena Harrison was a clear cut winner of the 800m in 2.29.9 from Ruth Bampton 2nd in 2.40.1 and Rebecca Cansdale 3rd in 2.43.7.
Nina Forney won the senior women’s 200m in 30.1 and the long jump with 4.31m and Hayley Fox scored in the pole vault with 1.80m and was 2nd in the discus with 22.31m. Dorothy Fraser mopped up the veterans 100m and 200m in 15.5 and 33.0 respectively and there was also a win for Denise Timmis with 4.66m to claim the long jump. The under 17 age group fared very well with Catherine Morton winning the 100m in 13.7 and the 200m in 28.9.
Rachael Nathan commenced her track season with an impressive 1500m victory in 4.40.8 a long way clear of Nicola Hale who was 2nd in 5.39.5. Nicky Dale took the javelin with 20.92m and Steph Bramhall won the pole vault with 1.50m and was runner up in the high jump and discus. Alice Thomas was also runner up in the 800m in 2.39.4. Natasha Johnson was a wide margin winner of the u15 1500m in 5.28.5 And there were 2nd places for Hayley Brylewski in both the 100m in 13.3 and the 200m in 27.6. In the latter event Elizabeth Samways was 4th in 29.3 and Carly Gilbert 5th in 30.2. Emily Taylor ran well to finish runner up in the 800m in a useful time of 2.29.0.
There were only two Wellington under 13 girls in action but both chalked up victories. Kelly Gilbert was an easy winner of the 800m in 2.54.7 and Rachel Humberstone won the 1500m in 6.06.0.
Senior sprinter Ricky Lea made an excellent start to his season when powering home in front in the 100m in 11.2 and later completed a good double by taking the 200m. Simon Bell worked through well in the closing stages of the 5000m to finish 2nd in 15.59.3. Matt Bowser was disappointed with 16.13.7 for 3rd place despite claiming a club U20 record, and Dean Houlton ran strongly for 5th place in 16.58.5. Richard Ellis made his debut over the distance and was 1st U17 in 18.02.0.
Other senior victories went to Karl Longley with 35.76m in the discus and to Adey White who cleared 3.20m to win the pole vault. Adey Marston’s strong finish in the 1500m gave him the same time as the winner (4.20.3 ) but the judges decided he had just failed to get in front. Veteran Nigel Winchcombe produced two good performances to win the discus with 37.57m and the shot with 11.10m.
There was a very promising run from Matt Hughes to win the U17 800m in 2.13.2. Some way adrift entering the home straight he produced a remarkable finishing burst to take the tape comfortably clear. Jason Lovell was 5th in 2.21.3 and Daniel Burton 6th in 2.22.0. Richard Duffin had a busy afternoon with a win in the U17 long jump (5.27m) and other good efforts in the 100m,200m and discus. Luke Lovell was runner up in the long jump with 5.10m and also 5th in the 200m in 25.5. In a competitive 1500m Jason Hall was a good 2nd in a personal best 4.24.6 and Roy Smith a promising 3rd in 4.40.1.
The pick of the U15 boys results was Josh Stone’s very good 2nd place in the 1500m in 4.47.7. Wesley Caton ran hard from the gun in the 800m before finishing 4th in 2.28.8 with Tom Herbert 5th in 2.35.8 and Mark Plaskett 8th in 2.43.9. New member Michael Richardson was a good 2nd in the U13 100m in 14.6 and was also 4th in the long jump.
