Lincolnshire County Cross Country championships 2001 report - Sunday 7th January 2001 - Louth
A savage mixture of mud and hills could not prevent some outstanding Lincoln Wellington performances at the county cross country championships at Louth Athletic Club’s London Road circuit. The under 15 girls race produced a quite remarkable result with Lincoln Wellington providing the first three scoring teams. Rachael Nathan was content to sit with the pack until halfway but only had to pick up the pace a little in the final mile to draw clear very impressively by the finish. Natasha Johnson ran very well to come out a clear second best and Nicola Hales kept going strongly to give Wellington the first three places and complete the A team. Emily Taylor suffered a bad stitch but hung on well for 5th with Alice Thomas close behind her in 6th and Melanie Turner making late headway into 7th to give the B team 2nd place. The bronze medals went to Carly Gilbert who finished 10th, Sarah Coates in 12th and Poppy Lister 13th with Katherine Lowrie completing a very talented squad in 14th.
The first individual winner of the day was Josh Stone who made light work of the testing going to come home a long way in front in the under 13 boy’s race. Tom Herbert finished well for 6th place and Mark Plaskett’s dash for the line secured 9th spot for him and gave Wellington the gold medals by a slender one point margin.
The under 13 girls team were also expecting to be on top of the podium but the late withdrawal of Stacey Woods due to illness meant they had to settle for the runners up spot. Sarah Kimpton had a very good run to finish 3rd and was well backed up by Kelly Gilbert 4th, Rachel Humberstone 7th and Elizabeth Samways 9th.
The senior women made no mistake with Annette Bell, Claire Gregory and Kathy Warhurst finishing close together in the first three places with the latter having her best run for some considerable time. Jacqui Brown was a little further back in 6th with Jo Ragan 8th and Tracey Carnall 10th. In the veterans section of this race Charlie Donald picked up 5th place and Pat Kimpton crossed the line 7th.
The senior men’s squad have been successful in the race for the last few seasons but this year they were hampered by illness and injury and had to settle for second place. Simon Bell finished in 3rd place but was not as happy as he is on the roads. Adey Marston ran well to take 10th place and Gary Johnson did well to finish 12th despite still suffering from a back problem. Dave Humberstone was pleased to come back reasonably unscathed in 31st place following his long layoff. Tom Doe was always in the chasing group and finished 5th overall (3rd junior) but was another whose back was found out by the undulations.
A final team win for Wellington came with some good results in the under 15 boys race. Daniel Burton chased the leading pair all the way to finish 3rd with Matt Hughes close behind him throughout in 4th. Jason Lovell did well to pick up 5th place with Ian Kimpton just getting the better of Sean Dunn in 7th and 8th. A strong finish by Jason Hall in the under 17 mens race gave him 3rd place with Richard Ellis taking 5th.
And in the under 17 womens race Rebecca Cansdale also finished in 3rd spot ahead of Vicky Roach 4th.
