News April - June 2004

Wednesday 30th June 2004:   Two Lincoln Wellington athletes will shortly be in action in international competition. Blue Haywood recently won the Black Forest Trial  - a fell race on Ilkley Moor over 2500 metres and with a climb of 220 metres - and, as a result, she has been selected to make her international debut for the England team in the Black Forest Teenager Games in Germany on 10th-11th July.
Rachael Nathan already has several Great Britain vests against her name but after a four month layoff during the winter she has only recently resumed serious training. Second place in the 3000 metres steeplechase on her debut in the event at the AAA's under 20 championships last week was obviously sufficient to convince the selectors that she is on her way back. And as a result she will represent Great Britain under 20's in a match against Australia and other selected international competition at the Sport City Stadium in Manchester on 3rd July.
Three Lincoln Wellington athletes will have the honour of representing Lincolnshire Schools at this years English Schools track and field Championships at Gateshead International Stadium on July 9th and 10th. Lydia Chamberlin will run the intermediate girls 200 metres and will also be part of the 4x100m relay team. Last years English Schools junior boys 400m champion Tom Duffield moves up to the intermediate age group in the same event. And dual gold medal winner in the intermediate girls 3000m, Rachael Nathan, will contest the same event in the senior girls age group on her final appearance in a schools competition.

Saturday 1st May 2004:  Lincoln Wellington's athletes enjoyed a successful start to their North of England league season at Hull today.  The mens team recorded 1st place and the women 3rd place to give an overall 2nd place.  This is a very respectable start considering that the squad had a number of regulars missing.  Personal bests were recorded by Will Strangeway in the 1500m, Rachel Townsend in the 100m hurdles, Amy Orrow in the discus and Ian Kimpton in the 5000m.
Friday 30th April 2004:  Lincoln Wellington 15-year-old Tom Duffield is the latest athlete from the club to gain international status. He has recently been notified of his selection to represent England Schools in an intermediate age group European Schools competition in Milan at the end of May. Tom will be competing in the 400 metres, at which he is the reigning English Schools junior boys champion, and he also expects to be part of the sprint relay team. Following on from last years tremendous results which saw him take the AAA's title in his age and top the National rankings at 400m, Tom has already proved his current fitness with a 200m/400m double at the first Lincolnshire League meeting of the season. In the former event he recorded a very satisfactory personal best time of 23.4 seconds. His main target for the season will be to break the 50 second barrier for 400m and, with a seasonal debut time of 51.0 seconds which already qualifies him for this years English Schools Championships, his target should be achievable.
